I am still thinking about how surprised I am that you were able to find my ex-husband! I was divorced in 1987 when my son was only 2-years-old. In fact, my son hasn’t seen his father since that time. I had custody, and my ex had visitation. According to the divorce decree, he was supposed to pay $50/week. Bottom line--he never came to spend time with our son, and he never paid a cent.
Somehow, we survived a total of 15 years without child support. It was very hard; we never had enough money…and I am really good with managing money and budgeting. But my ex left me with all kinds of bills that he had charged. Even though that was his debt, the collection agencies started coming after me and held me responsible for what he owed.
There were times when I had to work as many as three jobs, or I would try to work as much overtime as possible. It was pretty tough, and honestly, my pride kept me from going anywhere else for help. I felt that I shouldn’t even go to my family--my feelings were that this whole situation was a result of my poor choices, and I should deal with it. So, we struggled for quite a long time.
You know, living for 15 years without child support from my ex-husband was like walking around with a huge burden on my shoulders every day. Not only did I have to be Mom, Dad, Disciplinarian, and Breadwinner, but I also had to bear the financial worries every day. And, it weighs on you like a ton of bricks.
Life was not easy for my son either. I was often not a happy camper due to my constant worries. Actually, I don’t want to sound like I am complaining. I know that so many women out there have had it just as hard, if not harder. The main thing I want to say is that it is difficult, but we made it.
When I finally got the check that Supportkids was able to obtain, it was like I finally stopped holding my breath and let out a sigh of relief.
I want to tell Supportkids once again--thanks from the bottom of my heart for all the work everyone did. I went to the bank with the check and was able to open a college account for college for my son and that means SO much. Supportkids employees are angels in disguise, and the money will be so helpful in my son's life. I will be spreading the word.
